Battelle@KU

Dr. Durnford chosen as Director

Dr. Joyce Durnford has been selected as the first Director of the Battelle@KU Laboratory. With more than 30 years experience in research, Dr. Durnford most recently served as a Research Leader in the BioSystems Group at Battelle, frequently managing a multidisciplinary team working on biotechnology and cell biology. Having conducted programs for domestic and foreign companies, as well as the U.S. government, she is familiar with GLP and cGMP compliance. Dr. Durnford served two years as the QC laboratory manager for a cGMP recombinant vaccine production program, overseeing the development and execution of stability and release analysis, including an in vitro bioassay.

Dr. Durnford's research programs focus on developing and applying bioananalytic methods, with an emphasis on immunoassay-based methodologies and cell culture. These support studies in pre-clinical safety and efficacy testing of drugs and vaccines, medical and diagnostic device development, and process development.

"I am excited and enthusiastic about serving as the first Director of Battelle@KU," said Dr. Durnford. "I see my role as both deeply committed and transitional. I am deeply committed to establishing the foundation of good laboratory practices to build an environment for solid research, development, and problem solving. I consider my role transitional, because by combining the best of Battelle's laboratory management expertise with the best of Korean R&D, I look forward to the day I can proudly welcome a new Korean Director to the management of Battelle@KU.
